Happy Summer 2012

Happy Summer 2012

I am still out here, after a very long, somewhat lonely winter, and still seeking employment.  I've been forced to revise my resume (downsize it, that is) on several occasions, suiting it to meet various opportunities.

I do receive a lot of calls especially at the beginning of a month, or the quarter. I send in my latest resume creation and try not to get my hopes up.

Alas, I never hear from the agent again.

I have discovered a few things over the past year being unemployed:

  • Most agents that call me  seem  to be calling from India.
  • The issue with this has been that these agents have no idea of my geographic location: I am sent jobs for Hawaii (not bad), California, Idaho, Colorado, Texas, etc.
  • I an agent does submit me for a job and I'm shortlisted, he/she is  excited and calls me frequently. That IS exciting.  But once the job is given to another candidate, I never hear from most agents again (there are a few exceptions).
  • No matter how many emails I get for jobs, from many agencies, I can usually find them on my own via Google search posted on boards such as Monster or CareerBuilder or Sologig or Dice.
  • I apply to jobs even if it seems like I'm under qualified (e.g., more programming tech skills than front-end design).  I've noticed that many companies throw in any and all possible requirements to see what they can get.
I am still hoping to find work, even if it's temporary. Perhaps this will lead to a permanent job at the company that I'm on contract with. I've heard that's a good start.

Right now, I am freelancing... for a wonderful man who owns a creative agency in Princeton. I love the projects and they get increasingly challenging. So there is a silver lining.

Adios for now.  Let me have your thoughts and comments.
